When it comes to detecting orthodontic problems, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children come in for an examination beginning at the age of 7. Around this age, the jawbone is developing, and it is easy for Dr. Leithead to detect signs of and prevent more severe orthodontic problems in the future. Teens and adults should also make it a priority to come in for orthodontic exams, as even properly aligned teeth shift with age. Below are some of the more common problems we encounter at the office.
Orthodontic Conditions
- Underbite – An underbite occurs when the lower jaw extends past the upper jaw, causing the lower set of teeth to rest in front of the upper front teeth.
- Overbite – The upper teeth rest in front of the lower set of teeth
- Crossbite – A crossbite occurs when one or more of the upper teeth sit behind or inside the lower teeth.
- Spacing – Spacing refers to large gaps between teeth, either as a result of missing teeth or an aesthetic condition.
- Protrusion – Teeth protrusion is more commonly known as “buck teeth.” Protrusion refers to overextended front teeth. The main issue with protruding teeth is their exposure and susceptibility to injury.
- Open bite – This occurs when the upper and lower teeth to not meet when the mouth is closed.
- Crowding – Crowding of teeth occurs when there is not enough jaw space for all of the teeth to emerge properly.
